How Many Hours Is Fasting in Ramadan 2027? Times Worldwide

In Ramadan 2027, fasting in Türkiye starts at 12 hours and reaches 13 hours. First and last day durations from Istanbul to Oslo and Mecca to Sydney.

According to the calendar of Türkiye's Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), Ramadan 2027 begins on February 8 and lasts 29 days, with the final day on March 8. Because the month falls at the end of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, fasting durations are relatively short: in Türkiye, about 12 hours on the first day and about 13 hours on the last day.

In this article, fasting duration is the time between Fajr and Maghrib on the Diyanet calendar. Every city was calculated using the same method, following Diyanet's criteria.

Across Türkiye, the duration is nearly identical: on the first day, the difference between the shortest and longest fast is 13 minutes, and on the last day, just 2 minutes. On the first day, fasting is a few minutes longer in Türkiye's southern cities because winter days are longer closer to the equator.

Iftar time shifts, duration does not

The difference between east and west appears in the clock time, not in the length of the fast. On February 8 in Iğdır, Fajr is at 05:34 and Maghrib is at 17:38; in Edirne, Fajr is at 06:44 and Maghrib is at 18:45. In both cities, the fast lasts about 12 hours, but iftar in Edirne comes 67 minutes after Iğdır.

This is because Türkiye uses a single time zone. Since the sun rises and sets earlier in the east, all prayer times shift later from east to west. Fasting duration, however, is determined by latitude rather than longitude: distance from the equator and the season.

Shortest start and fastest increase in Northern Europe

On the first day of Ramadan, the shortest fasts are in Northern Europe: 10 hours 44 minutes in Reykjavik and 11 hours 5 minutes in Oslo. However, because daylight lengthens rapidly in these cities throughout the month, the fasting duration also increases quickly—lengthening by a full 3 hours in Reykjavik by the end of the month.

The opposite in the Southern Hemisphere

In the Southern Hemisphere, February is the end of summer. In Wellington, Sydney, and Buenos Aires, fasting starts at over 15 hours and gets shorter throughout the month. In cities close to the equator, it barely changes at all: in Kuala Lumpur, the difference between the first and last day is only 2 minutes.

Durations converge by the end of the month

The last day of Ramadan falls 12 days before March 20, when day and night are equal worldwide. Because of this, on March 8, fasting durations across the globe draw closer together: in every city on the list, the fast lasts between 13 and 14.5 hours.

About the calculation

Durations were calculated using Diyanet's criteria: for Fajr, the moment the sun reaches 18 degrees below the horizon, and for Maghrib, a 7-minute precautionary margin added to sunset. If the timetable in your country uses a different criterion for Fajr, the duration may vary by a few minutes to half an hour. In cities much further from the equator (beyond the 45th parallel), timetables also apply their own high-latitude rules.

You can view the Ramadan timetable for your city on the prayer times page.
